May Day in France opened with a Communist riot at Bagnoles, when knives and revolvers were freely used. One man was killed. At Madrid troops were confined to barracks, though armed guards patrolled the streets. Three police and five Communists were killed in riots in the Bulgarian village of Kniua. ■Six hundred political prisoners were freed on the May Day amnesty in Austria. The police swooped down on the Communist headquarters and arrested 500 as a sequel to a bomb thrown at the police station in a Vienna suburb, wounding four. At Moscow, the Soviet, in the presence of M; Stalin and other leaders, staged an air review over Ked Square, when 000 'planes, including four-motored bombers, swift interceptors, 30 new super-fast attackers and two-motor monoplanes with a speed of 200 miles an hour took part. A parade of Army, Navy and tank units followed. Civilian processions featured an enormous serpent, typifying Imperialism, wearing a Japanese cap over a pig's snout marked with a swastika. A blizzard with Ift of snow and a howling gale routed 5000 Communist coal miners marching on the town of Corbin, 8.C., following strike riots, with the avowed intention of driving out the provincial police. At Vancouver 12,000 paraded and sang the Internationale. They refused to carry the Union Jack.
