FINANCE MINISTER.
TEMPORARY CHANGE. RELIEVING MR. COATES. MR. HAMILTON MENTIONED. (By Telegraph.— Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Persistent rumours have been in circulation in the Parliamentary lobbies that an invitation would be extended to the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Government member for Dunedin West, and ex-Minister of Finance, to accept in an acting capacity the, portfolio of finance during the absence of Mr. Coatcs from New Zealand. There does not appear now to be any reason to expect that Mr. Stewart will return to the Ministry, if only for the reason that he has been found so often to be out of sympathy -with major aspects of Government policy. It would be difficult to imagine Mr. Stewart as even temporarily administering such a measure as that of the Rural Mortgagors' Final Adjustment Bill, which he bitterly opposed and voted against. Opinions in the lobbies are that the Postmaster-General, the Hon. A. Hamilton, will temporarily administer Mr. Coatcs' Finance portfolio.
