COLLEEN'S COSMETICS.

IRISH FREE STATE TARIFF. DUBLIN, February 24. Lipstick and other cosmetics are likely to cost more in the Irish Free State. The information has not eo far caused any alarm among the women folk. In future these things are to be made at home or. if imported, they will pay an additional 50 per cent tariff. This is another phase of the Government's self-sufficiency policy. Everything that it is possible to make or grow for home consumption must be produced at home. Everything must give way to the necessity of finding employment for the 320,000*0f the population who are unemployed, and the Government is ready and willing to help the home producer with a tariff against the outsider.

The trade under the head of cosmetics is estimated to be worth about £2r>0,000 annually in the Free State. It includes all kinds of face powders, teeth washes, and the preparations for the skin, nails, hair, etc.

Women's dress goods, hats, and shoes were formerly nearly all imported, and thece was much apprehension aa to how the home-made substitutes would be received- It can be said that in the result Dublin women arc no less fashionably dressed than their sisters of London and other English cities, and one does not hear that the cost is any more excessive or the lasting quality inferior.
