(Sent in by Tim Gill, 3S. Tanmatn Road S amir in.sham.)
Ohaeawai. which is 18-1 miles north of Auckland, has rather an interesting early history. In 1845 a clash between Hone Heke and the British under Colonel Deepard took place. Colonel Desnard was repulsed with a severe low, 101 British out of 200 being either killed or wounded, amonist them Lieutenant Philpotts, of H.M.S. Hazard, who was shot while climbing over the palisades at the head of the bluejackets. In the cemetery is a cross erected to the Maoris who fell there. Ohaeawai is in the Bay of Islands County. It is chiefly occupied with sheep and dairy farming, and kauri -urn digging. There arc also hot sulphur springs within three miles ot the township.
