Before a crowded audience in the library Mr. S. J. Aubrey, chairman of Lloyd's, spoke of the bravery of these men, who risked their lives in a tempestuous sea. Mr. Aubrey added that the committee of Lloyd's, ' feeling that the captain, officers and crew of the Xew York also took an important part in the rescues, had decided to present the ship with a bronze plaque recording the services rendered.

Second Officer Wiesen expressed their thanks, adding that they had only done their duty in trying to uphold the traditions of the sea. The- German Ambassador, Herr von Hoesch, read a message from the German Foreign Minister, Baron Xeurath, in which ho said: "I regard the honouring of the courageous deed in a foreign country as a significant proof of the fact that the spirit of sacrifice and helpfulness shown to such a degree by German sailors is fully understood and recognised among other nations." As the German sailors left the library for the Underwriting Room they were received with loud cheering.
