THE NAZI SPIRIT.

A WORD FOR GERMANY

(To the Editor.)

Now that so much is being said against the'epirit of Nazi Germany it _ is well to remember that it owes its origin in part to the work of British statesmanship. In 1918 the German people laid down their arms in the belief that there would be accorded to thenj the just and honourable peace foreshadowed in President Wilson's Fourteen Points. Instead of this a treaty was forced upon them which to-day seems nothing short of amazing in its severity, stupidity and injustice. This Treaty of Versailles was agreed to by Britain's representatives and enforced upon Germany largely through the fear of the continuance of ° Britain'* naval blockade. The burning resentment of to-day is merely the natural result of the actions of the Allied statesmen. Even harsher terms were imposed upon Turkey by the Treaty of Sevres, but in that country conditions were different, and it was possible for the Kenialists to overthrow the peace settlement by force of arms. By the subsequent Treaty of Lausanne it appeared to be proved that justice can only bo got by the use of force: Turkey then gained a peace that satisfied her ambitions. Germany, on the other hand, waited another ten years before rebelling against the tyranny of Versailles. Now that she has done so it is to be hoped tha. her viewpoint will be fully appreciated by 'Britain's leaders. If it is not, and war follows through a failure to revise the treaty, then the blame for the conflict will rest with us. PRO-NAZI.
