HOME TREATMENT.

IRRITABLE BLADDER. (By PERITUS.) Great discomfort and inconvenience is caused by what is commonly known as irritable bladder. This mJl y oc associated with kidney disease, haemorrhoids, and other conditions in both ;iexes. More often it is of nervous origin, and has no serious significance. It is almost useless to talk of selfcontrol, as the constant effort to avoid the trouble fixes the mind on the- very thing best forgotten; indeed, concentrated effort aggravates the condition. Once the patient is assured that no disease is present, and is advised to disregard the nervous symptoms as much as possible, a slight improvement i.-i generally observed, and this slight gain leads to a further improvement. Therefore it is important to adopt a temporary sedative treatment. The following simple mixture may be relied on: Liquor potassae, 20 drops; tincture of hyoseyamus, 20 drops; liquid extract of liquorice, 20 drops; made up to two tablespoonfuls with sweetened water. In more obstinate cases* the liquor potassae may be substituted by potash bromide, 15 grains. Either of these mixtures three times daily will check the annoyance. At the same time three tumblers of water should be taken during the day, half a pint at a time, between meals; and tea and coffee and cocoa put on the retired list. If drink is needed at meal times, milk, freely diluted with water, should take the place of alcohpl or tea. When improvement is definite an ordinary quinine tonic tends to establish it. The attempt at cure by reducing the quantity of fluid taken is not successful, and is not beneficial in other ways.
