Weddel and Co. state: — Business is extremely quiet so far as hides are concerned, and it looks as if we are going to experience this nosition until there are more settled conditions in the States. It certainly seems at the present time as if the North American market is the only one which is in a position to take the lead. .European markets have been doing very little trading, chiefly through the unsettled political and financial situation.

In colonial hides business has been extremely poor. This is entirely due to the lack of offers during the past week. We have cabled everv day to try to obtain something from New Zealand, but the renly has always been in the negative. We quote 4%d for New Zealand freezer cows, 30-501b, and abattoirs could probably be obtained at %d less.
