" By this is meant the distribution of the total sum available for Investment over a number of different holdings. The old proverb, "Don't put all your eggs into one basket" is particularly appropriate when considering the Investment of Money into Stocks and Shares. It is a good rule to | follow even If the amount available is comparatively small and is ALWAYS followed by those who are in any way skilled in such matters. If you carefully choose all your Investments and spread them over different classes of Stocks and Shares you will do much to ensure safety and reduce risk to a minimum. It is, however, not sufficient to select different stocks only. They should be different CLASSES of stocks. Only last week the writer was consulted by a client who a few years ago invested upward of £0000 in EIGHT different concerns, but they were ALL Banking Institutions. He had certainly spread his money, but all over one class of security, with what result only those unfortunate people who invested in Bank Shares prior to the depression and still hold them fully realise. Consider how different his position would have been to-day If he bad spread bis investment over eight different classes of shares, such as Insurance, Gas, good Preference Shares and sound Industrials, some of which have remained 6teady right through the depression and many of which I have since more than recovered in value; indeed, on to-day's market standing at a much higher price than they were before the depression. On the other hand Bank Shares are still at a low ebb and show every probability of remaining so for some time" to come. If portion only of bis capital had been invested in Bank Shares any loss o;i this portion would have been easily made up by the appreciation on his other holdings. The principle of so dividing your money applies as well to the person with £500 to invest as the person with £5000. Thus an ideal investment for the person with, say, £1000 to invest, is to place, say, about onefourth into first-class Debentures, about one-fourth into first-class Preference Shares, about one-fourth into Gas or Insurance Shares and the balance into the ordinary shares of some sound Industrial, where there is a probability of capital appreciation. By spreading In this way the Investor has, as far as humanly possible, insured the greater portion of his capital with interest return and i 9 having a mild speculation which may (if well chosen) give him a chance of increasing his capital without risking the whole of it. In conclusion, after seeking the advice and help which is always available from any competent, reputable Stockbroker, CHOOSE SEVERAL DIFFERENT AVENUES FOR INVESTMENT find avoid gambling, which is what von do if you put all or the greater part of your money into one venture, no matter how good it looks or what you are told about it.
