LAWN TENNIS.

AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION. CANTERBURY CHALLENGED. GUNN AND BROWN CHOSEN. Mr. H. Clay, vice-president, was in the chair at last night's meeting of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association. He stated that it had been decided to challenge for the Wilding Shield and also the Nunneley Casket, trophies held by Canterbury. The following teams had been selected: — Wilding Shield—N. G. Sturt, M. T. Wilson, A. D. Brown and J. W. Gunn.

Nunneley Casket. —Misses Marjorie Macfarlane, Ruth Taylor, V. Eccles and B. Knight. "The matches will be played about March 16.

Committee elected to manage tho Easter hard-court meeting:—S. deal, L. Williamson, J. T. Harrison, J. McCrystal, J. Fernandez, F. B. Busby, J. T. Andrews, J. K. S. Hall, C. Warren, A. C. Johns, C. R. Reader and J. Ewen.

Mr. Williamson gave notice to move that the question of play on Good Friday at tho Easter hard-court tourney be made compulsory. The chairman referred to the great loss New Zealand tennis had suffered through the death of Mr. Maurice Denniston. A motion of sympthy was passed with his relatives.

Mr. A. Bockett, manager of the Auck-1 land championship tournament, submitted a full report on the conduct of this meeting and made a number of recommendations for the improvement of future meetings. It was reported that a small profit had been made. The entries had not been as large as last season, due possibly to the changed date and the fact that the meeting had been preceded by the New Zealand championships. Junior and intermediate events are to be commenced two days prior to the. senior events in order to avoid undue hardship on junior players who were playing in both senior and junior events. This would also enable the tourney to be played entirely at Stanley Street and do away with the [ necessity of playing junior events at Parnell. The report was adopted. The committee in charge of the Auckland handicap tournament submitted a report on this meeting, which stated that the entries had not been as large as last year and rain had interfered with the progress of play. However, it was considered that next year, when players realised that those outside the championship standard were catered for, larger entries would "be received. A small profit had been shown. A larger number of post entries had been received, and the report suggested that as far as possible these should be discouraged. It was resolved that the closing date of entries for future tournaments be more strongly emphasised. A vote of thanks was passed to the committees that had run these two tournaments.

Matches arranged:—March 9 and 10, Auckland v. Bay of Plenty; March 23, Auckland v. Waikato Association.

SINGLE COURT FINALS. In the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's one-court B grade final, Saokville United heat Te Koraonga by seven rubbers to three. Te Koraenga won the A grade, Te Ivaro being runner-up.
