AVONDALE WOMEN.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS.
The annual meeting of the Avondale Women's Club was held in the Blockhouse Bay hall on Tuesday afternoon. The president, Miss Newton, was in the chair. The secretary's report and the treasurer's statement showed the club to be in a sound state numerically, socially, and financially. The presidential address was on the subject of "Women and World Peace." After touching on the havoc and misery caused by the Great War and the opinion of experts that a future war would cause infinitely greater and more widespread misery, Miss Newton briefly outlined the achievements of the League of Nations, not only in preventing wars in the past, but in alleviating human suffering and in providing the machinery to cope with social evils internationally. Miss Newton appealed to every woman present to link up with the League of Nations Union, and so be able to say that she, at least, had done what she could to strengthen the League of Nations, the most powerful force working, for peace in the world to-day. ■ At the close of the address it was unanimously agreed that the club should become a corporate member of the League of Nations Union, and make the literature of the league available to members for study.
The election of officers for the ensuing vear resulted as follow: —President, Miss Newton; vice-presidents, Mrs. Oxenham and Mrs. W. Keeley; lion, secretary and treasurer, Miss Ingram; assistant secretary, Mrs. Gill; committee. Mesdames Browne, Rigden, Wright, Metcalfe, Pendlebury, Greep and Walker. Regret was expressed that Mrs. Wood, a former vice-president, and an enthusiaetic worker, was at present too ill to attend meetings. A hearty vote of thanks, carried by acclamation, was accorded to all the members of the various committees who had helped in carrying on the work of the club during the year, special mention being made of Mrs. March, convener of the tea committee for the paet three years, who has moved from the district, and while retaining membership', will no longer be able to eerve on the executive.
