FIRE BRIGADES.
CONFERENCE ENDED. AUCKLANDER AS PRESIDENT. CONTESTS START TO-DAY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) BLENHEIM, this flay. The 56th annual conference of the United Fire Brigades' Association concluded to-day. Tlic election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Supt! 11. E. Follas (Devonport), elected unopposed; immediate past president, Deputy-Supt. J. R. Wilson (Milton); vice-presidents; Supt. A. Craig (Hamilton) and Supt. A. J. Bennett (Nelson) ; treasurer, Mr. C. A. Osborno (Onehunga), unopposed; secretary, Capt. T. J. Watts (Newmarket), unopposed. At the invitation of the president. Supt. J. J. Salmon (Dunedin) presented gold stars denoting 2;> years' continuous service to the following:—Firemen G. H. Hannay (Alexandra), E. Horve (Dannevirke), G. Jeseon (Eketahuna), E. O'Neill (Sumner) and C. L. Prestney (Rangiora). Supt. Salmon declared that the gold star was the highest honour after the valour medal, and it was a slight enough token in recognition of devotion of such a lengthy period to a fine service. Invitations to the association's 1030 conference were extended by Hastings. Akaroa and Tauranga, and were received with impartial applause. In due course, individual brigades will be circularised and invited to express their preference.
A fire brigades' demonstration to-day, but will be interrupted to-mor-row, when all tlio visitors will bo taken on a. cruise of tlie Marlborouph Sounds in tho ferry steamer Tamahine, which has been chartered for the purpose.
