FREEDOM IN RUSSIA.

We did say, and we unhesitatingly repeat, that in the Soviet Union the movement is ever toward greater freedom. We did not for one moment intend to claim that there was §towing freedom for the enemies of the union to do their worst. There is not, and it would be very bad business for the whole civilised world if there was. What we intended to convey, and what we believe we succeeded in conveying to most of your readers, was that in the Soviet Union there is an ever-growing freedom for citizens to be and do the very best that they are capable of being and doing. "The New Statesman" does not cut a very dignified figure shedding crocodile tears for the Union's \shameless foes. That journal would command ever so much more respect if it condemned in no uncertain voice the treachery, sabotage and cold-blooded murder that has made stern punishment inevitable. FRIENDS OF THE SOVIET UNION.
