UNUSUAL SEVERITY.
GALE SWEEPS BRITAIN. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, February 19. The gale which swept the British Isles during the week-end was of exceptional severity. In many parts of England gusts with a velocity exceeding 70 miles an hour were recorded. At Liverpool the speed of the wind reached 79 miles an hour, while at Croydon, London, it was 73 miles an hour. The storm was accompanied by an exceptionally heavy rainfall ill the Lake district, where flooded rivers joined Lakes Windermere. Rydal Water and Grasmerc. Much damage was done by the floods and winds on both land and sea.
The crew of a small steamer was driven ashore at Barrow. They were rescued by means of a breeches buoy.
