"CALUMNY."
MR. GROUNDS' COMPLAINT. "A WHISPERING CAMPAIGN." (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Tuesday. "The Prince of Pollution has been at work with a whispering campaign of calumny," said Mr. W. Grounds, member for No. 1 ward on the Dairy Board, when speaking to a meeting of 260 { farmers a.t Whangarei yesterday.; "Opposing interests have been unable to shake the public confidence in the stand I have taken in recent affairs, or upset the simplicity and candour with which I have presented my ideas. "A section have taken upon themselves* to reply with calumny, and have noised it abroad that I have been in receipt of payments for this, that and the other. To such utterances I give the lie direct. I ask friends to supply me with any specific instances of the uttering of such canards in order that I may give those responsible the opportunity of substantiating their remarks. "I was brought up in a school which believed that a part of every man's life and effort belonged to the public, and that, if such assistance was with- j held, the people were being robbed of their distinct right. I rely upon my j friends to protect the public from being degraded by these subterranean methods, which I can only describe as low blacki guardism."
