MAORI'S GREAT FEAT.

HARBOUR RACE. YATES JUST BEATS WEBSTER. TWO LADIES COMPLETE COURSE. There was rejoicing by a contingent of Maoris who arrived at the Akarana Yacht Club's shed yesterday not long before the finish of the three miles open water swim for the Annette Kellerman Cup, when L. Yates, in a sensational finish with that noted distance performer, Ronnie Webster, had won by three yards. Whareaitu and his companions hastened Yates to the dressing room. When it was seen that he was lit and well a haka was danced to celebrate this outstanding feat of endurance by a member of the native race.

Yates completed the distance in the third best time of 2h 12m 355, while Webster returned the fastest figures of 2h Urn 395, a fine achievement, for which ho will receive a gold medal. Second fastest time, 2h 12m ss, was registered oy L. G. Smith (Mount Eden), who filled third place. The time by Yates was third best.

Of the 21 competitors four were ladies: Lewis Grey, Kathleen Bull, Jean Tingle and G. Galloway, all of Auckland. The race is considered the most severe test of swimming endurance in New Zealand, and, although the warmth of the water made conditions much less rigorous than those experienced during previous contests in Southern centres, a dozen of the swimmers were forced to retire. The nine who lasted the distance were nearly all exhausted, but no one was badly affected, as prior to the race every starter was examined by Dr. Harold I'cttit. Their placings and finishing times were: —L. Yates, South Auckland (12m), 2h 12m 355, 1; R. J. Webster, Auckland (scr), 2h Oni 30s, 2; L. G. Smith, Auckland (7m), 2s 12m ss, 3; C. M. Robertson, West Coast (16m), 2h 24m 7e, 4; R. Webb, Auckland (9m 30s), 2h 18m 30s, 5; B. Hawartb, Wanganui (7m), 2h 18m 41s, 6; J. E. Allen. Auckland (13m 30s), 2h 27m 395, 7; Miss Lewis Grey, Auckland (24m), 2h 41m 15s, 8; Miss Kathleen Bull, Auckland (12m 30s), 2h 50m 30s, 9. The course was from the Akarana Yacht Club's steps to a buoy moored a quarter of a mile off Parncll Baths, then past the schooner Piri to another buoy close to the Orakei wharf. Rounding this the competitors headed for the starting point by way of buoys placed close inshore to the waterfront road.

The limit man, S. Guppy (Wellington), 28in, and L. Grey had passed the first buoy before Webster was sent away, but be gained on bis opponents at a solid pace. Ho and several other backmarkeis soon overtook the leaders and at the Piri. Usher (Auckland) was in front and leading Yates by 75 yards. Hawartb. Allen, Smith, L. Grey, Stevens and Webster were in fairly close pursuit. The winner of the cup last year, J. A. Young, of Christchurch, had withdrawn after covering about half a mile. Gordon Usher, the plucky cne-lcgged swimmer, gave way to Yates over the next stretch, and tbe latter rounded the Orakei buoy with an advantage of 100 yards. Usher was bard pressed by W. ,1. Stevens, Auckland, and Webster followed closely. Tbe competitors who paused the buoy at tliis time were fortunate in escaping the force of the incoming tide, against which those further behind made headway with much difficulty. Yates wasted time and energy by swimming wide of the correct course, and it was feared that bis chances would be ruined by the error, because Webster, beading directly for the next buoy, was quickly moving into second position. Yates regained the course and for the last .mile had a keen tussle with Webster. As they drew near tbe Akarana steps the waiting crowd saw that little would separate them at the finish, and became highly excited as each summoned ali that remained of bis speed and stamina.

MONA LEYDON FOR SYDNEY ? N.S.W. CHAMPIONSHIPS. The Ponsonby Amateur Swimming Club is sponsoring a movement to send Miss Mona Leydon, the present holder of the ladies' 100, 220 and. 440 yards freestyle national swimming championships, and also the backstroke title, to Sydney by the Mariposa on Friday. The proposal is to enter the Auckland girl for the New South Wales championships commencing on March 2.

A cable has been forwarded to the controlling body of swimming in Sydney, and it is anticipated that in view of her remarkable record the Australian executive will recognise the value of such an attraction at the meeting. No doubt support will also be coming from the Auckland centre, as Miss Leydon's efforts certainly deserve to be recognised by sending her abroad at the height of her swimming career.

FUTURE OF JARVIS. FAMILY MAY RETURN HERE. Mr. Harry Jarvis, who resided in, Auckland for several years before going to Dunedin, is anxious to return on account of his wife's illness. Sydney, is looked upon as New Zealand's future distance champion. Furthermore, Mr. Jarvis has a daughter, the youngest of the family, who shows distinct promise of ' following in her brother's footsteps.
