WEDDING CUSTOMS.
In the county of Durham there i? still observed the age-old marriage custom of placing a sovereign in each of the shoes of the bride as an indicatioi of future wealth. In Northumberland the bride appears to be less concerned with worldly wealth than with the control of her household. As she leaves the church after the ceremony her way i? barred by a "petting stool," over which she must jump in order to show to ivorld —and incidently to her spouse that her manner of meeting all obstacle, will be similarly summary.
