AN EASY-TO-MAKE BOOKCASE.
The neat and useful bookcase shown in our illustration may very easily be made from the ordinarylooking box illustrated at the top of the picture.
When open, the case has shelves for several sizes of books, and when closed you hawe a spacious compartment which is specially useful for storing purposes.
You should have no difficulty in obtaining a wooden box of the required dimensions. Should this not be possible, however, you can easily make one with a little timber and a few nails. A good size will be 12in
high, lOin wide and 12in deep. This size can be changed, however, without affecting the usefulness of the box or bookcase.
Lay out the saw lines on your boards carefully, with a square, and check for error before sawing out the pieces. Then nail the box together. This done, mark the diagonal lines on the sides, and the lines on top and bottom. Be sure that the line across the top divides the top exactly into halves.
Now you are ready to saw. Start at one corner and make a cut all the way around until the box falls apart in two pieces. To finish, set small hinges in the wood. Depressions, the thickness of the hinges, can be cat out with a small chisel.
Of course the box should he painted in suitable colours, and you can go a etep further and provide a nice design for the sides if you wish. A good colour combination is grey for the inside and outside, with Chinese red for the edges. This box bookcase will make a most attractive addition to the furnishings of a beach cottage or holiday bach.
