The official opening of the yachting season takes place to-morrow afternoon, when a series of races for all classes will be held. The events start oil' the King's wliarl and are under the auspices of the Auckland Yacht and Motor Boat Association.

The clubs taking part are the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Akarana, Devonport and Taniaki Yacht Clubs. Ponsonby, Victoria and Richmond Cruising Clubs, Takapuna Boating Club and Power Boat Association.

The season will also be opened on the Manukau to-morrow, tlie two local clubs holding races for yachts and motor boats, but not combined events. Races will also lie held by the Heme Bay Sailing Club, Alcarana Junior Club, and the Orakei, Manukau and Birkenhead Model Yacht Clubs. . ~ The sport of yachting, especially the holding of sailing races, lias appealed to (lie youth and manhood of Auckland from Hie city's very earliest days. .Tlie ceremony of the founding of Auckland on September 18. 1840, by Governor Ilobson and party, who landed in OlHcial Bay (somewhere between the foot of A n/.a c Avenue and the tSatlon olltel). After tlie British flag had been hoisted and saluted by 21 guns from the brig Anna Watson and Hie barque Platina, races were held between tlie crews of these vessels and a crew of workmen from Mechanics' Bay, followed by a match between two whaleboats manned by sailors and two large canoes paddled by Maoris. Ten years later tlie sporting fraternity of Auckland decided to hold a regatta on January 29. ISSO, which has been carried on with only one break for Ihe past 84 years. The interest in ships and the sea taken by tlie early residents lias grown until now we have 10 established clubs each with an average membership of 200 and a fleet of over 500 boats. Only 2." per cent of the boats go in regularly for racing, but they are very keen and frequently race in four or five clubs, especially on opening and closing days. The season lias started well, the entries are good and include a number of new boats built at the local yacht builders' yards or by amateurs during the past winter. Their performance against the older boats will be carefully watched from the end of tlie King's wharf and other points of vantage. STARTING TIMES AND COURSES. The races start off the King's wharf, classes over ISft finishing at Islington Bay. while all classes under 18ft will linish at the starting point. The starting times for all clubs are:—-Naval whalers, 1.45 p.m.: "Royals," motor boats, 2 p.m. ; "Royals." keel yachts. 2.20 p.m. : C and E class, 2.30 p.m.; II class, 2.38 p.m.; I< and N class. 2.40 p.m.; motor boats, .2.54 p.m.; T and X class, 3.2 p.m.; Y class, .'5.10 p.m.; V class, 3.18 p.m.; i S class, 3.20 p.m.; M class. 3.34 p.m. ; Z class. 3.42 p.m. The courses are as follow :—Classes C and E, 11. L and X. from starting line, between end of (lie King's wharf and mark boat moored north, around Duller spit buoy iii Rangltoto Channel, keeping channel side of Saiiilspit. Bean ltock- and white and red light buoys both, going out and returning from Dnder Spit, buoy, thence to finishing line in Islington Bay, observing at fairway mark the beacon below Rangltoto wharf. Motor boats go from starting line direct to Islington Bay, observing Sandspit, liean Rock and beacon below Rangltoto wharf. • * All classes 18ft and under wBl sail a course from starting line off the King's wharf,- round Sandspit beacon, thence round Resolution buoy off Parnell, f hence round mark at starting line, twice round,' keeping turning marks on starboard. The V. class will only go once round the course. The "Royals" will sail a course to be decided on Saturday morning. All races, except the "Royals," start by the five-flag system. The course for the naval whalers is from starting line off tlie King's wharf, round the Rona buoy above Xorthcotc Point, on starboard hand, and hack to starting line, once round. The New Zealand Power Boat Association will open the season to-morrow atternoon with a cruise in company to Awaroa Bay, Waiheke, where a dance will be held in the evening in Gordon's Hall. The boats will assemble off the clubhouse. Mechanics' Bay, at 2.30 and will proceed in company at a speed of about seven knots. The commodore, Dr. Long, will lead in Maro, followed by Vice-Commodore If. Chapman in Aliuareka, Rear-Commodore V. Townsheiul in Elvira, Defender (ex Scripps 111., G. Lane), Aumoe (I'.
