CENTENARY CHAMPIONSHIPS
McLEAN WINS THE AMATEUR. THOMPSON. LOSES PROFESSIONAL. MELBOURNE, November 22. In the final of the amateur golf championship to-day at the Metropolitan Club's links; 11. \V. Hattersley (New South Wales) was completely/ demoralised by J. McLean (Scotland), who took the title, winning by 11 and 9. McLean did the morning round in 6S. He did not allow the Australian to win a single hole. Against the Scot's devastating play Hattersley was only able to keep the game alive to the ninth hole. After lunch McLean's every hole from drive to putt was hit perfectly. Although Hattersley did not play badly, he was helpless against the merciless onslaught. McLean's brilliance kept a large gallery keenly interested. The best Hattersley could do in the morning was to halve, and, in the afternoon, realising the hopelessness of his position, he crashed badly all along until the seventh, which he won —his only scoring hole. The quarter-finals of the professional golf championship were played to-day. Results: — L. Diegel (United States) defeated Martin Smith (Victoria), 7 and 6. Craig Wood (United States) defeated J. Thompson (United States), 2 and 1. D. Shute (United States) defeated P. Runyan (United States), 4 and 3. J. Ezar (United States) defeated H. Cooper (United States), at the thirtyseventh. The best golf in the championship so far was played by Shute, who, with a brilliant morning round of 06, was 8 up on Runyan, captain of the United States professionals. Shute now shares McLean's record for the Metropolitan Club's course. The contest' is left now to the Americans, the only Australian, Smith, having lost to Diegel by faulty driving. Thompson, winner of the open title, was favoured for the professional championship, but was defeated by Wood. Thompson was 2 up at the afternoon turn, and the match was squared at the twentyninth, but at it lie thirty-fifth Wood brought the match to an end by spectacularly holing his second shot from a bunker after duffing his first. Ezar had a great struggle with Cooper. They were all square on the first 18, but in the afternoon round battled it out to the thirty-seventh.
