TREES DESTROYED.
EARLY LANDMARKS.
COUNTY COUNCIL PROTESTS.
SPOLIATION OF LANDSCAPE.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
GISBORNE, this day
The destruction by the Post and Telegraph Department of old trees, some of which are historical landmarks, evoked a' protest from yesterday's meeting of the Cook County Council, which decided to write to the Department and to appeal for greater consideration in this respect.
The chaihnan, Mr. Charles Matthews, referred particularly to the destruction if old trees of great historical interest at the Ormond Mission Station, where they had been recklessly cut down. The Department now proposed to remove old trees on the Te Arai Road.
Mr. F. S. Bowen remarked that on the old Woodbine Johnstone estate trees GO to 70 years old had been felled to make way for telegraph lines which might have been taken over another route to avoid spoliation of the landscape. One owner had gone so far as to offer to compensate the Department for such a deviation, but this was refused. In an effort to prevent the destruction of further old trees the council has decided to communicate with the Department and also with the Electric Power Board.
