MACHINE CONSIDERED UNAIRWORTHY.
'PLANE LEFT AUSTRALIA THIS MORNING.
What is undoubtedly the most foolhardy flight in the history of aviation in these regions was started this morning at four o clock, New Zealand time, from Gerringong Beach, just south of Sydney, with New Plymouth as the goal. A young New Zealand aviator and a resident of Manly took off in a singleengined Puss Moth machine, the certificates for which had been cancelled by the Australian flying authorities. The flight is therefore unlicensed. The aeroplane carries no radio apparatus, and for navigational purposes has a compass and an ordinary aircraft chronometer. The aviators hope to break the record for trans-Tasman flights. Forecasts were that bad weather would be encountered half-way across. The plane carries petrol sufficient for 20 hours' flying, and the cruising speed of the machine is stated at 110 miles an hour.
