AMATEUR SEMI-FINALS

McLEAN TOO GOOD FOR SMITH HATTERSLEY BEATS WILLIAMS. MELBOURNE, November 21. The semi-finals of the amateur golf championship were played to-day at the Metropolitan Club's links. Results:— J. McLean (Britain) defeated R. Smith (Victoria), 10 and 9. H. W. Hattersley (New South Wales) defeated H. L. Williams (Victoria), 6 and 4. McLean played brilliantly to lead Smith G up at lunch, with a card of 72. His play was not as good as yesterday's, but he was seldom off the line, and was unerring on the greens. Smith played gamely, biit was unlucky on the greens, several long putts grazing the holes. The last five holes were halved. Hattersley had the better of Williams throughout"their match. He always drove beautifully and took the lead from the start. He won the first three holes, Williams hooking his second irons. At the twelfth Hattersley, by holing a 20ft putt, scored in 3 against par 4. In the afternoon Hattersley maintained his lead and the result was never in doubt.

McMahon, 3 and 1. I). Sliute (United States) defeated H. Boorer, 4 and 3. , , Martin Smith (Victoria) defeated K. Eaffoon (United States), at the thirtyseventh. , „ „ , , T J. Ezar (United States) defeated M. L. Kelly (New South Wales), 2 and 1. Except for Kirkwooil and Sarazen, who are now on tour, all the professionals with 304 or better qualified for to-day's round. Thompson, winner of the open title, had a great battle against Stewart, the veteran South Australian, who led by three at lunch. . Thompson was still oft his game in the afternoon, but he succeeded in squaring the match by the twenty-eighth. Stewart again went to the front, winning the thirtieth and thirty-first. After that, however, Thompson took the lead by terrific driving, and won at the thirty-sixth.

CLOSING AT TIRAU.

The closing of the Tirau Golf Club concluded a very successful season. The president, Mr. N. Ilorscroft. when presenting the prizes, referred to the rapid growth the club had made since it had been revived in July this year, and stated that the membership was over 40. The prizes won during the day were Ladles' medal, Mrs. Isragg ; men's medal, W. liice ; mixed foursome. .T. B. Davis and Mrs. Kice. Tho trophies won during the season : —-Ladies bogey, Miss M. Dagg; ladies' eclectic, Mrs. Rice; men's bogey. A. Harrison; men's eclectic, J. Callaglian.

SARAZEN'S IMPRESSIONS.

The American professional golfer Gene Sarazen will sail for America to-morrow.
