The first women's lawn tennis Test between Australia and Britain ever played in Australia was commenced oil the Rushcutters Bay courts to-day. Australia leads by three rubbers to one. Results: — Singles.—Mrs. Westacott (Australia) defeated Miss Dearman, (3 —3, 10—8; Miss Hartigan (Australia) defeated Miss Lyle, 2—o, o—3,0 —3, 0 —1; Miss Round (Britain) defeated Miss Bickerton, G—4, o—2. Doubles.—Miss Hartigan and Westacott defeated Misses Dearman and Lyle, G—4. 2-G, B—6. The visitors were short of practice, but Miss Round l played superb tennis. Repeatedly she left her opponent standing with her brilliant placements.
Mrs. Westacott's heavy over-spin serves and drives confounded Miss Dearman. Miss Hartigan's severe forehand was too much for Miss Lyle. The Australian nair in the doubles surprised onlookers by winning, but thenvictory was liard-ear.ned.
