At a meeting of the Hobson County Council, Mr. V. Trounson presiding, the council adopted a motion reversing their decision which was made last month not to subsidise by the payment of £35 the cost of the reconstruction of the Tokinui-Raupo ferry slip., Since last meeting, said tne chairman, the position had altered in that £200 had been placed upon the Supplementary Estimates. Hesuggested that the council should reconsider their previous attitude.
A deputation comprising Messrs. D. Harrison (Ruawai), A. Legrice and A. College (Tokinui) waited upon the council and reported that £20 of the £30 promised by settlers had been collected. The balance of the amount was guaranteed. On the motion of Mr. Wordsworth (Te Kopuru Riding) it was decided to grant' £35, to be chargeable to Te Kopuru Riding towards the cost, which, with £30 from the settlers, £35 ffom Otamatea County, and £200 from the Government, makes £300 in all. It was stated tliat the contractor had offered to pay £10 per annum to each county for the sole right to use slips. The council decided to grant a two days' bonus, to workers on unemployment relief, estimated to cost £104. The Minister of Finance advised that a rebate of 124 per cent was being made on county rates under certain conditions. Mr. Somerville said this would only benefit the man who could pay , his rates.i The Chairman: We should thank the Minister. He lias had a lot of opposition. While we could do with more, we must be thankful for what has been granted. A motion to this effect was carried.
