EXIT THE STUMPY.
Jfc must be rather difficult dictate fashions in the matter of umbrellas. •There is a history of umbrellas which is by way of being a classic of French literature. But even that voluminous work never attempted to define what were the guiding principles which decided the shape, the form and the colour of this indispensable wet weather ally. From a commonsense point of view umbrellas should follow the fashion in hats. Big hats should mean big umbrellas. But nearly everyone nowadays is wearing toques of a size which do not oall for much protection from the weather. Nevertheless, the mandate has gone forth that the "stumpy" or the "stub" umbrella must be regarded as a thing of the past. Larger umbrellas are now "the thing." One ingenious person suggests that the size of the umbrella is dictated bj r the length of a woman's skirt. It is an interesting theory, but, unfortunately, there is nothing in experience to justify it. 1
