AUSTRALIA WINS.
WOODFULL-PONSFORD GAME. BROWN SCORES A CENTURY. TESTIMONIAL FUND OVER. £2000. . MELBOURNE, November 20. The testimonial cricket match to Woodfull and Ponsford, between Llie former's Australian Test team and The Rest, captained by Richardson, ended to-day in a win for Australia by seven wickets. The Rest had made 190 runs in their first innings, and 3U9 in their second, and Australia had scored 316 in their first innings, thus requiring 280 to win. This total was secured rfor the loss of three wickets. I The receipts, including donations, brought the total of the testimonial fund to over £2000. With easy strokes to-day Brown made 102, and put Australia well on the way to victory. His swings, cute and glides were the perfection of timing. Nagel was the first bowler who compelled respect on the easy wicket, and the scoring slowed down. . Ponsford's downfall was brought about when he hit a rising off ball from McCormick. He failed to keep it down, and was easily caught by Hill. Kippax and Darling were associated in a useful partnership, and carried the score to the necessary total. Ponsford has announced his retirement from first-class cricket. Scores:— THE REST. First innings ' 190 Second innings • • 399 AUSTRALIA. First innings 316 Second Innings.
