TRANS-TASMAN SPEEDS.
With regard to a recent paragraph about the Mariposa, "Sea Serpent," whilst admitting that the speed accomplished is high* it is not surprising, as, given the necessary favourable conditions, the vessel named j* capable of 21 knots, but your reporter is m error when lie states that both vessels were designed for 25 knots. Had that been the case they would have qualified for 12 dollars per mile subsidy instead of 10 dollars, as at present paid. The fact is that the top speed is slin-htly over 21 knots, as the vessels were built'to accomplish 20 knots only. Although Lloyd's Register shows them as between 22 and" 23 knots, they have never done that speed, and to the best of the writer's knowledge neither the ownegs nor their New Zealand agents have ever claimed they are more than 21-knotters.
