LARGE DIVIDEND.
NOVICE AT HASTINGS. HOSPITAL SISTER'S LUCK. A sensation was provided at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's spring meeting at Hastings on Saturday, when Greenore won the Trial Stakes and paid over £200 on the win machine. He had never previously started, and was only named just prior to the meeting, for he was given in the acceptances as the Arausio—New Bliss gelding. There were only two 10/ tickets on him on the straight-out machine, one being purchased by a sister in a private hospital at Napier and the other by a shepherd at Hakowai station, Puketapu. The sister decided to back the horse on both machines, owing to the fact that J. Walsh, who had ridden Anemometer in the previous race, was riding Greenore, and she also got a substantial return on the place machine. There have been several much larger dividends in the Dominion than that paid by Greenore. A trotter, Wairoa Belle, who won at Nelson, returnedtfover £1000. Ephialtes, at Carterton, paid over £500, and Raramu, who accounted for a hurdle race at Avondale, returned upwards of £450. Leo Delaval, at Takapuna, and Sibella, at Banks Peninsula, paid over £300, and Versant, at Avondale, over £200. The double Star Rose (New Zealand Cup) and Captaiii Shannon (Stewards' Handicap), at Riccarton in 1900, returned over £2000, while the double Black and Gold and Apologue, at Takapuna, paid over £900.
