YACHTING CONTROL

AUCKLAND ATTITUDE.

CENTRAL BODY NOT FAVOURED

SANDERS CUP COUNCIL.

The question of affiliation with the New Zealand Yachting Council and Auckland's participation in future Sanders' Cup contests was dealt with at th e last meeting of the Auckland Yacht and Motor Boat Association, and a number of resolutions were carried unanimously dealing with both matters. '

, The Auckland Yacht and Motor Boat I Association, says a report supplied I entertains the most cordial feelings of I good will towards similar bodies in j other parts of New Zealand and desires at all times to maintain this good will I but it considers the existence of a New ■ Zealand Yachting Council neither necessary nor desirable for the following reasons: "It believes undue organisation of any sport is not in the interests of that sport. Except in special cases, it considers decentralisation is desirable in the' sport of yachting in New Zealand. It does not claim to exercise complete control over the fourteen yacht clubs functioning in Auckland, and in consequence its affiliation with a New Zealand Yachting Council would not confer upon the New Zealand Yachting Council any control over yacht clubs in Auckland. The sport of yachtin» in New Zealand differs from most other sports, in that geographical considerations prevent interprovincial yachtin" contests excepting in a minor degree. It is considered impracticable to maintain a truly representative council ol New Zealand yachtsmen for many reasons, and particularly because suitable provincial representatives will be reluctant to undertake the frequent travelling involved when there are no substantial matters of yachting interest to be dealt with by such a council. To Re-establish Sanders Cup. Referring particularly to the Sanders Cup contest the Auckland Association says it regrets the position which has arisen, and it is willing to co-operate with other yachting organisations in New Zealand for the purpose of re-establishing the Sanders Cup on a proper footing, to which end it resolves: To nominate delegates to attend any conference which may be held to consider the re-establishment of the Sanders Cup contests. Such delegates are to be empowered to agree to the inclusion of the Auckland Association in a Sanders Cup council or any similar body, the activities of which are limited to the conduct of contests for the Sanders Cup, but not unless they are satisfied that the conference lays clown such a basis upon which future Sanders Cup contests are to be held as will ensure that the races will be solely tests of the skill and seamanship of the crews.

The resolutions have been forwarded to Mr. G. R. Curtis, chairman of the New Zealand Yachting Council, also to the four Southern yachting associations.
