STEETON WINS.

SURPRISE IN N.Z. CUP.

STEWARDS' TO GRAND SPORT.

SYMCONY THE WELCOME STAKES

(By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.")

CHRISTCHRCH, Saturday

The weather was fine but dull for the opening of the Canterbury Jockey Club's four days' spring meeting. The course was in excellent order and the- attendance was good. The totalizator handled £30,222, compared with £35,5)40 on the first day last year, an increase of £282. For the Spring Hurdles the favourites were Free Air, Lycidas, and Red Sun. Free Air, Monastic,-and Hounslow led off, then Free Air took sole charge, and she was always in front afterwards. Jerry Boy fell near the seven-furlong post and interfered with Monastic. Free Air led into the straight from Coll, Red Sun, Monastic, and Hounslow, and the riderless Jerry Boy, who had a heavy fall at the next hurdle. Free Air was first over the last hurdle and came on to win by two lengths from Red Sun, with Monastic four lengths away. He just beat Coll for third, with Revision, Hounslow, and Lycidas next. Spring Plate. In tlio Spring Plate Sam Smith was a hot favourite, Rebel Star being second choice. Rebel Star, Master Reynard, and Strong Light were the first to break the line, but Rebel Star quickly drew ahead and led round the far turn from Master Reynard, Chidden, and McHeatli, with Sam Smith last. The favourite then began to improve his position and at the half-mile lie was fourth from Rebel Star, Master Reynard, and Chidden. Rebel Star retained enough of his advantage to win by a length from Manetho, who just beat Sam Smith for second. Chidden was fourth and Strong Light next.

Rider Injured. W. Scobic, rider of Jerry Boy in the first race, suffered head injuries. He was sent to hospital, and his condition is satisfactory.

Rebel Chief Again. In the Limvood Handicap Rebel Chief scored his fourth win in the last live starts. Capital stumbled at the jump away and Weatherly was first out from Sea Fox, Toj) Coat and Knockout. The last named momentarily had charge, but Rebel Chief jumped past him and Knockout seemed to get squeezed back coming round the turn. Rebel Chief led into tho straight from Tuirau, Hostis and Silver Step. Sea Fox miyle a determined effort to overtake the leader, but was beaten by a length, with the Derby candidate Hostis, who was having only his second start, three lengths away. Silver Step, Tuirau and Top Rank beat tho others. Rebel Chief was ridden by L. J. Ellis, and the win brought that jockey level with K. Voitre. Rebel Chief was favourite with the bracket TuirauTop Rank next.

The Cup Race. The New Zealand Cup turned out to be a remarkable race. Steeton was prominent from tlie Jump oft, and by the time they, reached the back she was fully 15 lengths in front. At the sixfurlong post she etill had a margin of about ten lengths, which was reduced to eix at the half-mile. Steeton was followed into the straight by Some Sh/Hn;ble, Great-Star,. Gold Trail, Rexl jfahfred, Hazoor, Polydora, Walton Park and Might. Gold Trail made a big effort from tlio distance, and Might also put in a flue run. Steeton,. however, won by two lengths from Gold Trail, with Might three lengths away. Hazoor was fourth; then came Red Manfred, Polydora, Walton Park, Ranelagli, Cough, Acsculus, Nightform, Some Shamble, Great Star, The Smuggler, Silver Sight and Sungem. Steeton is trained at Invercargill by T. Pankhurst for Mr. J. B. Macgregor. W. Jenkins, the winning l rider, Is apprenticed to S. G. Ware, at Wingatui, and has been riding with considerable success. Polydora carried £105!) 10/ and £775 10/', Red Manfred £453 10/ and £532, and The Smuggler £200 and £502. The Steeton-Cougli bracket carried £83 10/ and £194.

. Symcony Leads Throughout. In the Welcome Stakes Symcony was the first to break the line and she led throughout. When they settled down Silver Sail, Penelope and Kinnoul were nearest to her. Silver Sail fought on gallantly, but Symcony beat her definitely by a length, with Penelope three lengths away, third. Kinnoul and Bunfight beat the others. Brougliton, who rode the winner, brought his winning total to 23, the same as those of L. J. Ellis and Voitre.

Favourite Wins Apprentices'. Scratclimere Scar was a very hot favourite in the Apprentices' Handicap. Wee Musk was the early leader. After going about two furlongs Horn's Reef was interfered with and dropped back to last place. Wee Mu?k was still in front at the home turn frpm Scratclimere Scar, Quito Soon, Heather Glow and Pawky. Scratclimere Scar was first into the straight, and although challenged by Heather Glow,' won by two lengths. Maroha was third and Sibella and Honest Maid next. Copyist's Challenge Fails. Tho favourites for the Stewards' Handicap were Grand Sport ( £425 and £420) and Copyist (£370 and £451). Palermo was left badly and tailed the field. When they reached the .course -proper Variant led from Tizzy, Grand Sport, Mobile, Cranford, Davolo, Pin Money, and Copyist. Tizzy had charge again at tho distance, but was passed by Grand Sport and Cranford. Grand Sport then secured the upper hand. Copyist put in a brilliant finish on the outside, but failed by three-quarters of a leugth to reach Grand Sport. Cranford was a neck away, third, and Tizzy a good fourth. Mobile, Gaysome, and Davolo were next. When Knockftn was scratched yesterday A. H. Eastwood was left without a mount in the race, and he was promptly Secured for Grand Sport. The time today was equal to the race record. Sporting Blood's Victory. The Riecarton Handicap was won by the Derby candidate Sporting Blood, a stablemate of Grand Sporty Fair Weather made most of the running, and led into the straight. Cricket Bat was in charge at the distance, but Sporting 1 Blood wore him down and won by a neck. Southdown was a neck away, third. Synagogue, who met with interference, and Custodian were next.
