REEF. RAISED. » PORTLAND ISLAND 'QUAKE. NOW TWO FEET HIGHER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GISBORNE, this day. A sheep farmer from Portland Island, Mr. Novell, who is visiting Gisborne, reports that a recent earthquake raised the reef on the island two feet above the former level. Portland Island is south of Mahia Peninsula, Hawke's Bay, with a lighthouse which is connected by telephone. It was so named by Captain Cook because it resembled Portland, England. To commemorate their association with the original ship Waiwera, which took the first two New Zealand contingents to the Boer War, the South African War Veterans' Association has made arrangements to present a suitably inscribed braes plate to the second vessel of that name, which is at present in New Zealand waters. The presentation is to be made when the' ship is in Wellington between November 17 and 20.
