DESERVED TO LOSE.
ONEHUNGA BETTING. BOOKMAKER ON SUSTENANCE. MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT. "People who bet with you deserve to lose their money," said Mr. W. R. MeKean, S.M., to Geo. Lloyd, who pleaded guilty in the Police Court at Onchunga this morning, when charged witli carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Sergeant S. A. Brown told the Court that a man named Broniich took a double with accused at 50/ to lid. on two horses. Both won, but Lloyd failed to pay out. The latter said in defence that he paid Bromich 12/(1 and promised to give him the balance in a few days when lie received some money which he was expecting. When this was not forthcoming he asked for a little grace, lie had /not yet received the money and had not been able to pay the balance. .Mr. McKcan said he was not concerned with Lloyd's reason for not paying, but with the fact that he had no right to make the bet. When Lloyd said that he was on sustenance Mr. MeKean said, "Good gracious, you are not in a position to pay a heavy fine.'' Lloyd was convicted and fined £2 or seven days. He was allowed one month in which to pay the line.
