AIDING EX-SOLDIERS
t CANADA'S EFFORTS. SUBSIDY ON PRODUCTION. COSTLY LAND SETTLEMENT?. "We have the same trouble in Canada as in other parts of the Empire—the old soldier who cannot get employ. ment," said Brigadier-General A. Eos s Dominion president of the Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League, who arrived to-day by the Niagara on his way to attend the bienniel conference of the league to be held at Melbourne.
"We are endeavouring to shape definite national policy," said General Ross, "and we are hoping for the cooperation of the Government and the co-operation of civilian organisations with a view to a proper study of the problem of securing work for men who are not receiving State aid. Something has to be done for those men who are now in dire distress and getting on in years. A campaign has been started and carried on throughout Canada. This has had strong Press backing, and it Las the full sympathy of the public.
"Canada has very limited opportunities for the employment of what is known as 'handicap' labour. Most of the work is for men who are fit for hard, unskilled labour. There is little sheltered employment, as -so much of the industry of the country is connected with lumber and agriculture. What we are endeavouring to do is to get groups of interested ex-servicenien who have established themselves to assist in finding work for men who are not permanently disabled or incapacitated. We have been greatly impressed with the interest being taken by these groups."
