CRICKET.

TO-MORROW'S CONTESTS.

TOWNSEND IN ACTION,

PLAYS FOR FONSONBY AT FARK.

The principal event in the cricket arena oil Saturday will be the appearance of L. F. Townsend, the Derby professional. Hu will take his place in the Ponsonby side, which will continue its game with King's College, oil No. 2 ground, at Eden Park. Ponsonby (batting one 6hort) were dismissed for 96 last week, but got rid of six ex-col legians for 61.

Townsend scored over 2000 runs, and took 100 wickets in first-class cricket in 1933. He was not so successful last summer in England, but nevertheless did a great deal to place his county in third place in the championship. He will be interested to meet S. G. Smith, the former West Indies and England county player, who will be in the opposing team tomorrow. In the other game at headquarters, the 1033-34 premiers are in a strong position, for with only one wicket down Parnell want another 80 runs to head Grafton on the first innings. There promises to be a keen struggle at Devonport, where University—runners-up ill the championship—have to score 102 for six wickets, to get into position for a four-pointer.

In the match at Middlemore, Y.M.C.A. has p. great chance, and the 10<i runs required—with all wickets intact—to defeat Eden, should not be beyond them after the Young Men's fine batting form against University on Labour Day.
