LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

CHARITY DAY PLAY. AUCKLAND COLTS BEAT TAMAKI. SPRIXT RACE AXD GOAL-KICKIXG. Chilly weather synchronised with the worthy object of attractions at Carlaw Park on Saturday, whon the Auckland Rugby League presented its annual athletic competitions for players. The conditions suitPd football, and in tho main fixture, the Auckland representative colts accounted tor Tumnki In what proved n good ull-rounu match. The teams were : — Auckland Colts : Jones. Loader. Johnson. Brady. Halloran. Glover. Grotte. iliddleton, Wiberg. Craneh. J. and W. Stockley, letley. Taniakl: Paul, Morgan, Watene, Turei, J. Hlra, Kanhoa. Hira, T. Rnu, P. Nathan. Rawirl, B. Roberts, .7. Heri, D. Nathan. Within two minutes of the start. Tamaki by means of effective rearguard work turned defence into attack, their hnlt-hm-k. D Hlra. scoring at the corner. Splendid team co-operation occurred for ten minutes. Then the Colts invaded. and Halloran scored at the end of a looeo rush. Play was liy no means one-sided, but Colts agniD scored' through heady work by Grotte. who sent Loader across wide out from the blind side of a scrum. Another pretty try. revealing neat anticipation to cap a flashing concerted move, was scored by Johnson, a goul-less first half ending: Colts 0, Tamaki The Colts resumed with a series of brilliant passing sorties, Brady (2) and Johnson scoring for Wiberg to convert. Rearranging their team and concentrating ou their forwards, TaniinJcl took charge for a time, much to the delight of spectators. Hlra added three more opportunist tries to his kit, hut Colts came ngoln to assert their mastery and finish by a magnificent effort, which resulted in W. Stockley running in and Johnson adding the goal points. The final figures were: — 'Auckland Colts 29 Tamaki l^ Mr. S, Fisher was referee. NOTES ON THE GAME. The match did not disclose Iho best of young talent in Auckland, and yet it demonstrated that the colts in the city s lending tennis are quite capable of expound, ing all the best that Is In fust and open tactics, which spectators so thoroughly enjoy. Allhonith the Waltangl Shield-holders had a definite advantage in weight, sure timing in hnudlhw. with full speed on, bent thorn, to again exemplify the virtue of the golden rule— possession. The game hnd Its variations, too, for there was a judicious use of exploiting kicks with the follow through, and this added the element of surprise and thrill. Early in the second spell the Maori lade made a stern endeavour to close up the game, and. for a time, they succeeded, and registered three tries. However, the colts wore soon afoot, and finished well. Yet the margin of points whs hardly a fair criterion of the attractive run of play. With their full strength in (ho field, Tamaki, who had not a* much chance to work uj> combination as the opposition, with several club players m>l- - in the hacks, would be a much stifl'er proposition. i'orhu'ps one of the amazing features was tho regular manner in which the light colls scrum mors, with Wiberg, tho City Hovers - five-eighth in the role of hooker, won the ball from the heavy opposing puck : and a further wclcnnie aspect wns the even Wiiy In which the serums went down. It was rare that the referee had to re-order a scrum. The halfbacks were not penalised once for taking an Illegal o<l vantage. The tackling was clean und nurd, and yet both sets of playera revelled in the contest, which was played in a most pleoßlns spirit. What better compliment would it i>e possible to pay to the game? If only for opportunism and tenacity, which won him nil four trios for his side, the little Tnnuikl half-back. D. Hira, deserves special mention, and, with Hint said, it i.s only necessary to congratulate both teams, the colts' for. their enterprising exhibition and Tamaki for a sturdy but unperturbed defence in the face of defeat.
