RACING AT ELLERSLIE.

THE FORM REVIEWED. RED MANFRED'S EFFORTS. SHOULD SOON WIN A STAKE. "Red Manfred was responsible for a couple of really good efforts at the Auckland Racing Club's spring meeting. Prior to racing at Ellerslie, he had had only one outing since his brilliant three-year-old career last season. That effort, which was at Foxton, was most disappointing, but when he was brought north he galloped so well at Ellerslie that he seemed to have a good chance in the Mitchelson Cup. He came from a long way back over the last half-mile to get third, which was a good performance, seeing that he was giving weight to everything in the Held. On. Tuesday, in the King Edward Handicap, he was again top weight and was a good way buck at the turn for home, coming on to again occupy a similar position. This horse is engaged in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, with 8.8, on Saturday, and as he is a greatlyimproved horse as the result of his racing here, ho should be very hard to beat in that event. NOT FOR TRENTHAM. Mr. R. T. Reid had Star Artist. Royal Artist and the two-year-old Singara engaged at Trentham, but lie has decided not to make the trip. A SPEEDY HACK. Although lie has only one win to his credit, the Arausio gelding Flammanon, nevertheless, gives indications of beinfl a galloper above the ordinary. Flaniinarion has not done much racing, but was successful iu the Maiden Race at the last Wanganui meeting, and is engaged at the Wellington meeting in the Rimutaka Hack and the Trial Plate on the second day. EXCEPTIONAL PACE. S.vmcony has exceptional speed. In the Welcome Stakes she did not jump away as well as some of the others, but once into her stride quickly ran to the front and was only beaten by Galilee at the finish. On Tuesday in the Musket Stakes, she began very smartly, and opening up a big break on the others, nothing had a chance with her. That she is one of the smartest juveniles in commission there is no doubt whatever. A CUP CANDIDATE. ' A New Zealand Cup candidate in Copper King has only been seen out once so fur this season, and that was in the sprint event at the Foxton meeting. The Nigger Minstrel gelding, however, is engaged in the principal events at Wellington, and has been getting through a good preparation at Woodville (says our correspondent). Ail unprepossessing customer, but a good stayer, Copper King would only have to strike his form to become a lightweight possibility in the New Zcalund Cup. HAS SOME PACE. Numakia was a promising two-year-old, and by the manner in which she ran in the Great Northern Guiuaas she should win good races this season. She hit the front before half the distance had been covered, and once heads were fairly turned for home she appeared to be the winner.. She carried on in the gamest manner and set Gay Blonde a very hard task to head her off, and it wus only a comparatively few yards off the post that the favourite got her. Natnakiu is one of the Gay Shield tribe, and, like all the rest, knows how to gallop. She is in A. Cook's atable at To Awumutu. TRADESMAN UNLUCKY. Tradesman wus most unlucky in not winning the Epsom Handicap at Ellerslie 011 Tuesday. 611 the first day, after coming from a good way back, he finished a close third in the Shorts Handicap, and, seeing there was ruin in the interim, which was in his favour, he looked to have a great chalice ill the Epsom Handicap. He well and was in front quickly, but coming round the fur turn he was sent back and wus soon nearly lust. He was still a long way back at the straight entrance, but caine home in great style, only to be beaten by a length by RereatU. It was an excellent perofrmance, and one that deserved a much better reward. _ From now 011, when the going is a bit yielding, Tradesman will be very hard to beat. engaged at trentham. Star Artist was produced for the first time this season at the Auckland meeting during the week-end. She looked a bit big on the first day, but ran quite a creditable race in the Shorts Handicap to finish fifth. In the Epsom Handicap oil the second day she looked improved as the result of her first day's effort, and though she was never further away than sixth to the turn, drifted buck towards the end. Last season she wus a really smart sprinter. A FINE FILLY. Gay Blonde, after her third in the Dunedin Handicap at the Pakuranga meeting, and her easy victory at Paeroa, appeared to be the pick of the Great Northern Guineas candidates. She jumped away smartly, but her rider, A. Tinker, steadied her and kept her in behind tile leaders. At the homo turn Namakia. who had streaked away in front, looked almost unbeatable, but Tinker, riding Jier With great judgment, got 911 terms fifty yards from the post, and Gay Blonde scored nicely by half a length, Gay Bloilde is u bonny three-yeai-okl and it will take a good Ono to head her off even oVef a longer distance, for she finished 011 as struight tin a die. E. Pope has this filly in great nick at present, ROYAL ARTIST SURPRISES. Royal Artist created a great surprise by his effort in the King Edward Handicap at Ellerslie on Tuesday. He hud only had one race previously this season and that wus at Paeroa at tho beginning of the month, when 110 finished last in a field of six. Ho had not Won a race since he Was successful iu the Ohinemuri Cup last March, and in consequence Went out the outsider of the field. He ran up third along the back and took charge five furlongs from home, and it was only in tile last bit that Limbohni headed liim. Royal Artist, when at his befit, is a good stayer, and among other races lias a Wellington Cup to his credit. He Wus paying the best part of a century to win 011 Tuesday. A VERY PROMISING SORT. Allegretto was a good horse 011 the flat, and he made liis first appearance over hurdles at Ellerslie 011 Saturday. He ran into the lend along the back, and with Chromadyne held that position till three furlongs from home, when he drifted a bit, Free Air going on with Chromadyne. However, he came with a great run in tho straight and nearly took the event. If Chromadyne had not bored out' 011 Free Air (incidentally checking Allegretto) Allegretto would have won, for he was finishing faster than the other pair. Allegretto also made a good showing for a first attempt over the big country ill the Onehunga Steeplechase on Tuesday. He was well back for most of the Way, but finished on to got fourth. With a little experience Allegretto is sure to turn out a good jumper, and the next time he is in a hurdle race lie will be very hard to beat, for he is a safe conveyance, and the experience he had at Ellerslie should improve him I greatly, - - - I-:

DEVELOPED A BOIL. It was intended to send Galilee, the winner of the Welcome Stakes, to Trenthani, and in fact it was reported that she had gone. It now transpires that the filly developed a boil on her back, and the arrangements had to be cancelled. She was taken back to Te Awamutu by A. Cook. FAILED BADLY. Catoma does his work well on the track and it is hard to understand his mediocre showing over hurdles at the Auckland meeting during the week-end. On the first day he tackled the leaders three furlongs from home, but as quickly retired, and was beaten into fourth position at the finish. On Tuesday he never flattered his supporters at any stage of the race and finished last. His form must have been a very great disappointment to his connections, and he seems anything but a reliable betting proposition. TWO FOURTHS. Carfex has raced well in the Mitclielson Cup during the last two years, finishing fourth on each occasion, and evidently finds the distance just a bit beyond him. On Saturday in this event lie was not far away from the leaders, being fifth at the turn, but only improved his position slightly at the end. In the King Edward Handicap on the second day he appeared to have a great chance on that showing, but ho did not get too good a run and had to be content with sixth place at the end. Carfex will do better later. SECOND EFFORT DISAPPOINTING. Free Air has shown plenty of pace on the flat, and after her success at the Ueraldine meeting over hurdles recently it only needed her to stand up to have a royal show in the Trial Hurdles at Ellerslie on Saturday. She was well back early, but threo furlongs from home ran up to the leaders and won in good style at the finish. On Tuesday, in the Manukau Hurdles, she was again made favourite, but was never closer than fourth throughout, eventually finishing fifth. After her first day's effort her display was rather disappointing. IN GREAT FETTLE. lioyal Lmcagc galloped well at Ellerslie last Xluirsday, when he made an exnibition of Gamstid, and alter his performance in the aoutli over the battens it looKed as though he would have to be seriously considered in the Manukau Hurdles at Ellers* lie on lucsday. Thespis went oil: in the lead, and though he cut out a fast pace Koyal .Lineage, ridden a great race by H. Dtuieu, was always witliln striking distance, and when asked to go to the front tnree furlongs ll'om home quickly headed ilicspis and won handsomely. Koyal Lineage jumped in great style and should go ou to further victories in, the near luture. KILTOWYN'S SHOWINGB. Kiltowyn put up an excellent performance when he ran third in the inlying Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday. _ He was having his first lace since the Easter Handicap at the Auckland autumn meeting, but his track work gave him more than a passing chance. He was well back lor over halt the distance and finished on in great, style over the last couple ot furlongs, but, the start ho was giving the leaders proved just a bit too iiiucu lor him. He went away well in the King I'.dward Handicap on Tuesday and alter Dcing about the centre of the field till about half a mile from home, commenced to drift and finished well back. His display was very disappointing, but he is such a good horse that the latter effort should not discourage his admirers. EXCELLENT JUMPING. One of the finest exhibitions of jumping seen at Ellerslie for a long while was given by *\liss Dazzle and i' lower Bag in the Hunters' Steeplechase on the first day of the Auckland meeting last Saturday. The pair were on terms taking the double in front of the stands, with a round to go. They Continued to race together till they readied the top of the liill (both jumping splendidly), where Flower Bag ran past JNlisa Dazzle, but the latter was not to be denied, and was with Flower Bag again at the sodwall at the bottom of the lull. She then drew away, and crossing the last fence in front stayed there. She had a pull in the weights, and that helped her considerably, but all the same she has more pace than Flower Bag on the flat and is just as good a jumper. Miss Dazzle has now won two oil end and she looks like being a really good 'chaser. .The Kllei'sllo trainer J. Thorpe turned her out in great condition, and he has only got to keep, hei' l'ight to win further good races. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. Nominations for the Auckland Cup, Railway Handicap, A.K.U. Handicap, Grandstand Handicap, Summer Cup, Clifford Plato and King's Plate, to bo decided at the summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, close with the secretary, Mr. W. S. Spcnec, at 5 p.m. to-morrow.
