BLOODSHED IN SPAIN.
CATALONIAN REVOLT.
SUPPRESSED BY STATE FORCES.
SHARP FIGHTING IN OTHER CITIES.
MANY DEAD IN INDISCRIMINATE SHOOTING.
A wave of revolt, accompanied by general strikes, fierce fighting and much bloodshed, is sweeping throughout Spain. The chief centre seems to have been in Catalonia, where an abortive attempt was made to set up an independent republic. The rising was only suppressed by the bombardment of the headquarters of the rebels, headed by the President of the State, who surrendered to the army commander on whose support he had relied to prosecute the establishment of a republic. In Madrid there was much street fighting, and the rebels i attacked Government buildings, while police and soldiers under- ! took the running of public services. The Government is now stated to have control of the situation, though martial law still reigns and a curfew has been declared. Workers have been ordered back to their employment, and factories and shops to open, but schools have been closed. A revised estimate of the casualties places the killed at 300 and wounded 700.
