NEW ZEALAND CURRENCY BASIS

EFFECTIVE TO-DAY

The Bank of New South Wales has arranged to supply daily quotations of the basie upon which it is prepared to do business in the purcnase and sale 01 the foreign exchanges shown below. The- foreign currency is expressed in terms of New. Zealand funds, and two rates are quoted generally, one for trans-1 actions on a telegraphic basis, and the other for on demand or mail settlement. THE MARKET STEADY. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCIIUKCII, this day. A lengthy quotation list marked this morning's call, but sales were not numerous. Values were steady to firm. The Government section was quiet, und buyers left several i.ssucs alone, though a notable offer was made for 19.55 4 per cent stock at £113, without a seller responding. There was a fairly steady tone among banks, with Commercials of Australia again recovering after yesterday's lapse. Ncvf Zealands had a continued demand at slightly below yesterday's levels. the market closing between £2 8/7 and £2 8/9. An unsupported seller for National appeared at, £3 15/. Insurances were again very strongly held, with no selling response for South British, and buyers at £4 13/6. National offers came in at £1 0/8, ivith holders 4d above. Steady requests for Loan and Agency stocks failed to produce business, though Goldsbrough, Mort had close quotations between £1 10/1 and £1 10/2. An offer for Loan and Mercantile ordinary stock was made at £45, with a holder £0 above that. Tooths were most active of the brewery section and sold freely on a falling market, quotations closing Id on cither side of the last sale price. A long list of miscellaneous issues was quoted, but not one sale was recorded Dunlop, Perdriau, D.I.C. (prof.), Broken Hill and Kauri all improved on buyers' offers, holders refusing to meet them except at their own .higher figures." Mining sales' saw late rates generally maintained, with an exception in the case of Mount Lyell, which dropped 2d from yesterday's levels to have business and, further sellers at 19/8.
