A WHOLE RACE.
Attempt to Find Another Home For Assyrians. MAY BE IN BRITISH GUIANA. (British Official Wireless.) , (Received 2 p.m.) RUGBY, September 23. In October, 1933, a committee of the League of Nations Council was set up to examine the question of settlement outside their country of the Assyrian race living in Iraq. The first possibility considered was settlement in Brazil, but at the Council meeting of last June it was decided that this scheme was not practicable.
The committee was instructed to examine other possibilities. It appealed to about 12 other foreign Governments, inquiring if they could offer any assistance.
The British Government has been examining the possibility of finding a suitable area in British Guiana. Preliminary investigations Bhow that there is an area of about 30,000 square miles which appears to offer some of the conditions required by the Assyrians, who are a pastoral and agricultural people who need land, where they can graze their cattle and raise their crops.
The committee is to meet again at Geneva on Monday, when the British Government will inform it of the\ position. Meanwhile, the Government of British Guiana has obtained an option for an area of between 1200 and 2000 square miles, but further investigations will be necessary before the land can be definitely pronounced suitable.
The committee will no doubt continue its examination of possible areas in other parts of the world.
The willingness of the Assyrians and the Iraq Government, and the question of finance must be considered before any scheme becomes at all definite. The British Government has already announced its willingness to pay a normal share as a League Power to any expenses: involved. i
