BUSINESS IS BRISK. GOVERNMENT STOCKS SELLING. SOME LINES GO HIGHER. Pronounced, activity is still the prevailing note on the Auckland Stock Exchange. Owners of Government stocks, tempted by higher bids, have offered more freely, and fair business was done in this class, both yesterday afternoon and this morning. After the. last two sales at the 10 call Holders again withdrew, the only offering being a. parcel' of 'W bonds, for which £108 10/ was asked. :; ' ■ In the banking .section Unions -were again asked for, a buyer coining in.: >t £9 8/. Other bank shares wore steady at late rates. Insurances maintained recent pains, with .firm offers and few sellers. • Australian stocks were in fair demand, but Colonial Sugars failed to hold ih_c recent, advance and eased to a sale, at .Cfii. after which the market stood at £66 2/6 to £67 5/. Chief feature of the mining section has been an upward move in Waihis, which, following a sale/last night at..£1,13/3. Wei-e quoted this morning between £1 13/3 and £1 13/5. ■ Still Active at Noon. The market was still active at noon, when offers were raised all round for tax free stock, the 1939-43 issue reaching £8 5/ above par, which represented a sharp iisS~since the interest was paid last.'-iycek. Commercial Banks were steady, . and more were available at the sales price, with buyers 2d below. Among the mining, Matakis maintained their value, and closed with quotations %d above and below the market. INTEREST RATES. The return to the investor on his outlay, based upon the latest dividends, works nut as follows on the latest sales. When Government stocks, arc included the calculation provides Cor redemption at maturity. Where payment is made in sterling exchange is added.
