" DUCHESS OF DANTZIC." To-night will see the initial effort o£ the Mareo Operatic Society in Auckland. This is a version oE the late Ivan Caryll's beautiful and romantic light opera, '"The Duchess of Dantzic," which is an adaptation of the more famous story of "Madame Sans-Gene." Mr. Eric Mareo, founder and organiser of the society, is producer. The play opens this evening at His Majesty's Theatre and will 'be staged until September 29 inclusive. CITY SHOWS. This evening's entertainment-seekers in the city have choice between the Mareo Operatic Society's opera, "The Duchess of Dantzic" or the following film programmes:—St. James', "Viva Villa," a vibrant romantic study of Mexico's famous desperado-hero, starring Wallace Beery; Plaza, a new spectacular musical revue, "Wonder Bar," with a cast of stars; National and Prince Edward, jointly, the remarkable health drama "Damaged Lives"; Majestic, "Murder in the Private Car," an up usual comedy-mystery film featuring Charlie Ruggles; Civ'ie, the outright horror picture, "The Black Cat," with Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi costarred; Roxy and TivoJi jointly, Joe E. Brown in "A Very Honourable Guy" and Alice Faye in "She Learned About Sailors"; Regent, "The House of Rothschild," with George Arlies, now entering its second week; Strand, "The Affairs of Voltaire," ott Arliss revival. " MASSES AND MAN." A thoroughly unusual type of play will be presented by the W.E.A. organisation in the Old Grammar School. Symor.ds Street, to-morrow evening and on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The play is "Maeees and Man," by the German Communist Ernst Toller, and was written by him in prison.
