WILL OF LEGISLATURE
HIS EXCELLENCY'S ATTITTJDE,
On September 6 a meeting was held in the Wellington Town Hall at which resolutions were passed protesting against the extension of the life of Parliament, the permitted trading in New Zealand waters of subsidised American ships, and the pegged high exchange. The meeting also called on the Government to hold a general election. The resolutions were forwarded to his Excellency the Governor-General by Mr. William Thomson, who organised the meeting, and he has received the following reply from Kir Cecil Day, official secretary to his Excellency: — * "I am directed by tho Governor' Gfeneral to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of September 10 submitting :opies of four resolutions adopted at a meeting at the Town Hall on September "While ho cannot prudently give yon tor publication an official reply to resolu:ions of this character unless submitted ;o him in a formal way, such as, fo: , jxample, by petition, his 'Excellency feel.* "ree to direct mo to make, for your nformation, the observation that", a* •egarels the particular matters referred ;o in the resolutions, he could not, with n-oper regard to the Constitution, take my step which would render abortive he decisions of the majority in a legally ionstitutod Legislature." Copies of . the resolutions were also 'orwarded to the Prime Minister, but so ar he has not replied.
