LARGER PREMISES.
SOCIETY OF ARTS. OPENING CEREMONY. The enlarged premises of the Auckland Society of Arts in the Victoria Arcade were opened this afternoon by the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, at a luncheon, at which some 100 guests were present. At the same time he declared open an exhibition of some CO works, by Miss Tennyson Green. Larger accommodation had been greatly needed for some time, said the president, Mr. C. R. Ford, but the premises the society now had would be sufficient for years to come. The work of looking for larger accommodation had been begun in the presidency of Dr. E. B. Gunson. He had to thank the Mayor, the town clerk, Mr. J. S. Brigham, and 'other officers of the Auckland City Council for what they had done to help the society. He thought that it was peculiarly fitting that the chief magistrate of the city should be present, for a city without art was a city that was not civilised. The civic authorities should do all possible to foster art. He had to thank the Mayor for the visible sign he had shown in being there at that function. Referring to the exhibitor, he said that Miss Green had been trained at the'Slade School of Art, and later she had taken up etching. Though it was fashionable to-day to decry the Royal Academy, yet Miss Green had beea "hung" in the Academy. That was some indication of the merit of her work. She possessed great versatility. There were specimens in water colours, oils, etching and other black and whites. The Mayor congratulated Miss Green on her work, and in a brief speech declared her exhibition and the new premises open. I = =
