DEATH KNELL.
VILLAGE OF MAMAKU. SAWMILL NOT TO REOPEN. STATEMENT BY MR. FORBES. (By Telegraph.—-Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, 'tine day. The results of consultations between the Prime Minister and the Railways Board concerning' the closing of the State sawmill have been inconclusive, and it appears that the death knell has been sounded for the Mamaku village. The only outcome of the deliberations was a statement that an endeavour would be made by the Railways Board to find work in parts of the railway service for the men who have been dieplaced by the closing down of the mill. It was admitted by Mr. Forbes today that it would not be possible for that employment if it were made available to be provided at Mamaku. It has not been found possible to lease the mill to the men on a co-operative basis, Mr. Forbes explaining that according to members of the board the necessary arrangements could not be made. The board, however, had promised to review the position at the end of the current financial year, instead of ut the end of July, as originally intended.
