llr. IT. P. Richmond went south by last night's Limited. Dr. J. Hardio Neil returned from Duncclin this morning. Mr. Justice Herdnian left for Hamilton by the Limited last night. Mr. F. Pidgeon, of E. W. Pidgeon and Co., Auckland, has returned from a trip abroad. Mr. E. H. Sevier, general manager in New Zealand for the Vacuum Oil Co., is at the Grand Hotel. Mr. G. Z. Lindley, of Dunedin, a director of Sargood, Son and Ewen, Ltd., went south by the Limited last night. The Hon. John Alexander, M.L.C., arrived from Wellington by the Limited this morning on Native Affairs business. He will return to Wellington to-morrow night. Mr. D. F. Moncur, managing director of the Canada Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd., arrived from Wellington by the Limited this morning and is at the Grand Hotel. Archdeacon F. W. Chatterton, vicar of St. Luke's, Rotorua, intends to retire from his ministry at the end of this year. He has been at Rotorua for nearly 16 years. Mr. C. L. A. Stevenson, who has been a member of the Gisborne Magistrate's Court staff for the past ten years, has been transferred to the oflicial assignee's office in Hamilton. Mr. F. W. Ilobbs lias been nominated as president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, iu succession to Mr. A. F. Wright. Mr. L. G. K. Steven has been nominated as vice-president Mr. W. J. Holdswortli, chairman of the Auckland Electric Power Board, Mr. R. G. Clark, a member of the board, and Mr. N. M. Speer, secretary to the board, left for Wellington by the Limited last night. Flying-officer J. W. Burgess, son of Captain J. W. Burgess, of the New Zealand Government steamer Matai. is one of the officers of the seaplane squadron of the R.A.F., which is flying from Basra to Melbourne to take part in the Centenary celebrations. Mr. George A. Bucklin lias been appointed Consul-General of the United States of America in Wellington and will be a passenger by the Monterey, which arrives at Auckland on October 5. His last appointment was that of Consul at Victoria, British Columbia. Lieutenant-General Sir Alexander Godley will arrive at Auckland from London by the Rangitiki on October 24 and will spend two days here on his way to Melbourne, where he will represent the Officers' Association at the biennial conference of the British Empire Service League.

Mr. G. C. Billing, lecturer in'economics, Otago University, lias been granted the degree of Ph.D. Mr. Billing went to England ill 1932 with a Rockefeller fellowship v and has been studying at the London School of Economics. Mr. and Mrs. Billing and their young child will leave London in October and wilf spend two months at Adelaide before going on to Dunedin. Mr. L. <T. Grecnberg, general secretary of the Wellington Y.M.C.A., has been granted six weeks' leave of absence by the board of directors and will leave Wellington on October 5 for Australia, where he will investigate association methods in Sydney, Melbourne and, Brisbane, and also inquire into the various schemes in the Commonwealth for placing,boys in employment, particularly in agriculture. During Mr. Grecnberg's absence Mr. H. J. Steptoe will act as general secretary.
