YOUTH OF RUSSIA. Sharpshooters Comprise ManyGirls. CHILDREN ON PARADE. (United r.A.-Electric Telegraph-Copyright) (Received 1.00 p.m.) LONDON, September 2. The Moscow correspondent of the "Manchester Guardian" says that the Soviet youth showed they are defenceminded when 500,000 of both sexes demonstrated in Red Square at the observance of the twentieth international Youth Day. After speeches exhorting youth to do its utmost for the defence of the fatherland, one contingent, composed of boys aged from eight to ten, was paraded carrying wooden rifles. It was noteworthy that nearly half of the groups of sharpshooters was com-'' prised of girls. The demonstrators also manoeuvred models of battleships and miniature tanks across the Square. RUSSIA PROTESTS. .CONDITIONS IN MANCHURIA. (Received.2 p.m.) LONDON, September 2. "The Times" Kiga correspondent states that the Soviet has handed the Japanese Ambassador a Note protesting against the inhuman tortures to which Russian prisoners in Manchuria arc allegedly subjected. Japan is requested to take determined steps to prevent a continuance of these incidents.
