MAORIS FOR AUSTRALIA.
TEAM TO GO OVER IN 1935. SOUTH ISLAND TOUR SOON. Mr. Stanley Dean, chairman of the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union, announced after a Rugby conference at Rotorua on Saturday that a Maori team would tour Australia in 1935. A representative Maori football team is to tour the South Island this month. Players will assemble at Otaki on Thursday and will leave Wellington in the charge of Mr. King! Tnhiwi on Monday, September 10. The first match will be against South Canterbury on September 12. There will also be games against Otago on September 15, Southland on September 19, and Wellington on September 22. The following team was announced by the Maori selectors after the Prince of Wales Cup match at Rotorua on Saturday: Backs. —G. Nepia (East Coast), C. Smith (Hawkfe's Bay), Hohatata (Bay of Plenty), R. Watson (Nelson), W. It. Davis (North Auckland), P. Kaua (Poverty Bay). P. Himona (Wairarapa), H. Mason (North Otago). W. J. Phillips (King Country), H. Harrison (East Const). Forwards.—R. Mitchell (Bush), W. Cooper (North Auckland), I. Tangitu (Bay of Plenty), G. Harrison (Taranaki), H. Mataira (Hawke's Bay), M. Kopata (Horowhenua). J. McDonald (Marlborough). P. Smith (Hawke's Bay), G. Ferris (Poverty Bay), M. Rika (North Auckland). When Mr. Dean and Mr. A. C. Kitto, vicechairman of the New Zealand Union, arrived at Rotorua on Saturday, they were accorded an impressive welcome at Obinemutu. Representatives of all the principal tribes of the Bay of Plenty and the East Coast were present, and others included the Minister of Native Affairs, Sir Apirana Ngata, and Mr. Taite Te Toino, M.P. for Western Maori.
