REP. RUGBY GAME.

AUCKLAND AT WELLINGTON. A LOSS BY THREE POINTS. j FEATURES OF THE PLAY. I (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) j WELLINGTON-, this day. After an unpromising the ■weather was fine for the AucklandWellington match. There was an attendance of about 14,000, prior to the commencement of play the teams exchanged cheers with ex-players in the grandstand. G. Roberta replaced Dellabarca in the Wellington team. The toss favoured Auckland, who •had the assistance of a fresh northerly in the first spell. The early play was somewhat ragged. Though there was some lively forward play, attempts to use the backs were generally fruitless. Wellington were freely using the touchline, apparently awaiting the changeover. One Auckland back movement promised well, but Kedgley failed to take Caughey's pass. There was a general lack of penetration by both back lines. Heazlewood ambitiously attempted to kick a goal from a penalty outside halfway. There was a temporary stoppage whilst Hadley received attention for an injured knee. Auckland were taking scrums instead of line-outs, but often lost the ball. Wellington got a plentiful supply of the ball, and also profited by their opponents' handling errors. Barry dribbled to the Auckland twenty-five, where the visitors were penalised in front of the posts, and Fuller goaled. • The spell was then half over. Immediately afterwards Heazlewood equalised the scores by similar means. A great Auckland movement, Bush, Pearce, Knight, Ross and Pepper cooperating, shattered the defence, the ball eventually going to Caughey, who passed too high for Kedgley. A certain try was lost. After a like effort by backs and forwards together McLean passed forward when tackled on the line. From the resultant scrum Pearce scored, and Heazlewood, with a splendid Mck, converted. Pollock was injured in stopping a rush, and Upchurch replaced him. Auckland pressed hard, but could not score again, and at half-time the score •was: — Auckland 8 Wellington 3 For the second spell Sadler replaced Kilby, who had injured his ankle. An attempt at goal from a penalty by Fuller, fronvnear halfway, hit the crossbar and bounced back. Leahy (Wellington) was replaced by Coulston. A brilliant jinking run by Hedge cleared the way for a try by Pearce. Heazlewood made a great conversion. During a scramble near the lino Sadler dodged through, scoring between the posts. ■■ Fuller converted. There were roars of applause when shortly afterwards the little half-back repeated the effort. This time Fuller missed. Within two minutes Lilburne broke away and passed to Sadler, to Robins, who scored. Fuller kicked a great goal. McLean was replaced by Lockington, and" then Smith was replaced by McGrory, while near the finish Hedge was replaced by Frankham. In the last quarter of an hour Auckland fired away several chances. The final score was: — Wellington 16 Auckland 13
