TRADE INTERESTS

AUSTRALIA AND N.Z.

NEW COMMISSIONER ARRIVES

it BETTER "UNDERSTANDING."

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

WELLINGTON", this day.

The first resident Australian trade commissioner in New Zealand, Mr. R. H. Nesbitt, arrived by the Wanganella to-day. He said he was looking forward to making many friends. The appointment by the Commonwealth Government of a trade commissioner to live in New Zealand was definite evidence of the desire for closer relationship between the two countries, and it was also a gesture of good will and brotherhood. Mr. Nesbitt referred to the fact of New Zealand'e having a resident representative in Australia, and said that by having resident representation in each country a facility was provided for the readier exchange of views on questions of moment.

Since the announcement of his appointment Mr. Nesbitt has spent many weeks visiting the States of the Common* ealth, and thus has had an opportunity of personally eeeing at work many of the industries, both and small, which are interested in trade with the Dominion, as well as of discovering at first hand some of the problems and difficulties that may have to be solved in the course of his duties.

He said the trade agreement entered into last year was one that ehould enable trade to flow with greater eaise and freedom between New Zealand and Australia. The attitude of mind towards its operation should be mutually sympathetic. It would be his privilege to endeavour to place the viewpoint of the Commonwealth not only before the Government of the Dominion, but also before the people, and in that way he hoped to bring about a much better understanding as to the attitude and outlook of the Australian Government and of the commercial and primary producing sections of the Commonwealth.

Mr. Nesbitt mentioned that tourist interests would also come under his care.
